The Federal Electoral Commission reported this week that virtual citizenship applications through the Esperanto Charter have surpassed 200,000 since the beginning of 2026, with a marked acceleration following the Federal Assembly's May debate on whether virtual citizens should vote in federal elections. The surge reflects growing diaspora engagement with the Republic's constitutional questions ahead of the March 2027 general election. Applications have come from forty-three countries, with concentrations in Spain, France, Germany, and the United States.
Virtual citizenship, formalized in 2024 under the Esperanto Charter, grants full civic rights except the federal vote—a restriction that has become a focal point of political debate. The Movado Esperanto-Civitana party and La Verda Aliro have jointly called for immediate federal suffrage for virtual citizens, while the Nord-Slovaka Bloko and Federacia Renovigo have opposed extension without additional residency requirements. The surge in applications suggests that diaspora communities view the 2027 election as a potential turning point on the question.
The Federal Electoral Commission's Director, Olena Petrova, declined to attribute the surge to any single cause but noted that international media coverage of the suffrage debate had coincided with the spike. She indicated that the Commission was preparing for a significant increase in virtual citizen participation in regional elections, particularly in Tierra Verde, which is the only region that currently grants virtual citizens the right to vote in regional contests.
