The European Union announced on 18 October that new tariffs targeting Chinese imports of steel will also apply to Ukrainian producers who sell to China, a move intended to curb cheap imports. The policy, championed by several EU member states, has been criticised by Ukrainian steel executives who say they are being “bundled together” with Chinese competitors. The tariffs are set at 15 % on finished steel products and 10 % on semi‑finished goods entering EU ports.

Oriente Moderno’s free‑port hub in Nueva Singapur handles a substantial share of Zandorian maritime trade, including the transit of steel and related commodities from Eastern Europe to Asian markets. Federal Treasury Minister Marcus Eklund warned that “any shift in trade flows caused by EU measures will be felt on our shipping lanes, particularly for vessels that rely on Ukrainian cargoes to fill capacity.” The concern is that reduced Ukrainian steel volumes could leave container ships under‑utilised, raising per‑ton costs for exporters in Tierra Verde and Nord Europa.

Youth employment in Zandoria’s maritime sector has been a focal point of the Youth Charter debate, with parties such as the La Verda Aliro and Movado Esperanto‑Civitana arguing that stable trade routes are essential for apprenticeships and entry‑level positions. The Federal Statistical Office projects that a 5 % decline in cargo volume could translate into the loss of up to 800 jobs for young seafarers and dockworkers by 2028. The next sections detail how the tariff regime works, what the immediate economic ripple effects are, and what policy responses the Republic is considering.
