Yerba Mate Prices Climb as Frost Damage Ripples Through Tierra Verde

The frost struck in the second week of May, catching the early-season harvest at a vulnerable stage. Temperatures dropped to minus four degrees Celsius across the Río Esperanto valley floor—the coldest May night in seventeen years, according to the Federal Statistical Office. Damage assessments are still underway, but the Cooperative Council in San Vicente estimates that between eight and twelve percent of the mature plantings in the interior counties will require replanting.

At the federal exchange in Meridian, a kilogram of dried yerba mate has climbed from 3.24 florins to 3.83 florins. The price surge reflects both the supply tightness and forward-looking trades by exporters anticipating a smaller harvest through the summer. Oriente Moderno's port operators have already raised loading fees for agricultural containers, citing increased volume pressure as buyers rush to secure stocks before prices move higher.

For the region's smallholder cooperatives, the arithmetic is tense. Higher prices at export should mean higher payments to members—but only if the cooperatives can move their frost-damaged lots without taking a loss on replanting costs. The Cooperative Council has called an emergency session for next week to discuss a federal subsidy request and the mechanics of damage claims under the Agricultural Resilience Fund.
