Yerba mate cooperative fortifies after theft exposes trust gaps

The San Vicente Yerba Mate Cooperative discovered the theft on a Monday morning in late October, when inventory counts revealed that three tonnes of dried leaf—worth approximately forty-two thousand florins at current federal exchange rates—had vanished from a sealed storage unit overnight. The cooperative's management immediately notified the regional police and the Cooperative Council, triggering an internal investigation that would expose gaps in how the cooperative monitored its facilities and tracked its stock.

The theft itself remains unsolved. But the cooperative's response has been swift and far-reaching. Workers have installed new electronic locks on all storage units, implemented a dual-key system for access, and begun daily inventory audits. The cooperative has also hired a part-time security monitor and upgraded its digital record-keeping system to flag any discrepancies in real time.

For the cooperative's members and leadership, the incident has crystallized a larger anxiety about the organization's vulnerability. The San Vicente Yerba Mate Cooperative processes and distributes leaf for more than two hundred member-farms across the region. It is a linchpin of the local economy. And yet, as one worker observed, the cooperative had been operating on trust and habit rather than on systems designed to catch or prevent theft.
