Industrial waste site collapse kills 27 in Nueva Singapur outskirts

A massive landslide struck the municipal waste site on the western fringe of Nueva Singapur on Monday afternoon, burying a series of storage silos and adjacent worker housing. Emergency services recovered 27 bodies and reported 12 injuries, several of them critical. Preliminary assessments point to a failure in the site’s retaining wall, which collapsed after weeks of heavy rain that saturated the underlying clay. The site, operated by the regional Waste Management Board, handles an average of 1.5 million tonnes of solid waste annually. Governor Daniel Park visited the scene on Tuesday, ordering an immediate suspension of all waste‑acceptance operations until a safety audit is completed. He instructed the Federal Interior Minister Tomás Vidal to deploy a task force that will review engineering standards across all regional landfills. The federal Treasury announced a ₣ 5 million emergency fund to support families of the victims and to finance the reconstruction of the retaining structures. An independent commission, chaired by Professor Helena Marin, will conduct a public inquiry slated to begin in September.
