The decision by Washington and Tokyo to intervene jointly in currency markets to prop up the yen has been noted with unusual care in Meridian, where the florin's own fixed relationship to the euro is a matter of constitutional habit rather than daily debate.

The Federal Treasury has not issued a formal statement on the move, but officials familiar with its thinking said the intervention was being studied as a rare example of coordinated action between two large economies acting on a currency that is not their own.
