Tierra Verde's Smoke Drifts to Meridian, Raising Questions About Fire Prevention Across the Republic

The smoke arrived on Tuesday morning, a pale gray veil that settled over Meridian by midday and persisted through Wednesday. The Federal Environmental Ministry said the haze originated from controlled burns in Tierra Verde's interior that escaped containment, mixing with smoke from at least two uncontrolled fires in the departments of Misiones and Corrientes. The smoke column reached an altitude of 3,000 metres and drifted northeast across 400 kilometres of airspace before reaching the federal capital.

Governor Lucía Báez acknowledged that the controlled burns had been conducted without advance coordination with Meridian's environmental authorities, but she defended the practice as essential to Tierra Verde's forestry management. She said the region's smallholder farmers and cooperative forestry operations rely on periodic burns to clear undergrowth and reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires in the dry season. The uncontrolled fires, she added, were likely ignited by lightning or agricultural accidents in remote areas where fire-prevention infrastructure remains sparse.

The incident has exposed a longstanding tension in the Republic: Tierra Verde and Nord Europa, both landlocked interior regions, manage their own forests but lack the resources and early-warning systems that maritime regions like Costa Mar and Oriente Moderno have developed for coastal and port-area fire prevention. When smoke crosses into federal airspace or reaches another region, the question of responsibility becomes contested.
