Tierra Verde farmers caught in diaspora crisis as conflict traps families across federal borders

The Río Esperanto runs through Tierra Verde's agricultural heartland, but it does not flow to the coast. The region is landlocked, its rivers feeding only inland valleys and cooperative towns. Yet in recent weeks, the river towns have become nodes of a diaspora crisis that has nothing to do with Tierra Verde's own borders and everything to do with the geography that separates the four regions of the Republic.

In a territory thousands of kilometers away, across an ocean and a continent, a region of the Federation has descended into armed conflict. Families are trapped. Communications have failed. Food and water are scarce. And in the small towns of Tierra Verde—in San Vicente and the cooperative districts and the Guaraní-speaking interior—farmers are receiving fragmentary reports of relatives they cannot reach and cannot help.

Rosa Gutiérrez, who tends coffee on a five-hectare plot outside the town of Encarnación, has not heard from her sister in three weeks. The sister lives in a city in the conflict zone, one that Gutiérrez describes only as "the place where our mother's people came from," a region she visited once, in 1998, and has not seen since. "I do not even know if she is alive," Gutiérrez said. "The internet is gone. The telephone lines are cut. I have sent messages through people who have left, but I do not know if they reach her."
