Tierra Verde Lifts Protection for Mountain Puma, Reopening Old Wounds

The morning mist clung to the pastures outside Oberá, a town in the northern cattle counties of Tierra Verde, when Sergio Castillo found three of his Brahman cows dead on the perimeter fence. The kills bore the unmistakable marks of a large cat—deep claw wounds, the throat severed with surgical precision. It was August 31, and Castillo had just received a federal notice that the mountain puma, protected under Tierra Verde's conservation charter since 2004, was no longer an endangered species. He was now legally permitted to shoot any puma that threatened his herd.

The decision, issued by the Federal Ministry of Interior in consultation with Tierra Verde's environmental council, reclassified the puma from endangered to stable based on a three-year population survey that estimated the animal's numbers had recovered to sustainable levels across the region's remote highlands. The ministry's announcement was technical and brief: the protection order would be lifted effective September 1, and farmers with documented livestock losses would be permitted to apply for lethal-removal permits.

What seemed like a straightforward wildlife decision has reopened one of the deepest rifts in Tierra Verde's recent history. For decades, the region's cattle ranchers and its conservation advocates had been at odds over land use, predator protection, and the very meaning of sustainable farming.
