The schoolhouse in Oberá, a farming town ninety kilometers east of San Vicente, opened its doors on Monday morning to find no teacher waiting. Thirty-seven children sat in the courtyard while parents appeared at the gates, confused and then angry. By midday, word had spread: teachers across Tierra Verde were striking over unpaid wage increases promised more than six months ago.

The walkout began in the highlands on Monday and has spread to at least fourteen municipalities. Schools have closed. Parents who depend on school hours to work in the fields or cooperatives are left without childcare. The Tierra Verde Assembly's education committee is in emergency session. And the underlying dispute—whether rural teachers will earn enough to stay in their profession—has become a test of whether the region can sustain the Guaraní-language revival it has championed for three decades.

The strike is not about ideology or union muscle. It is about survival. Rural teachers in Tierra Verde earn fifteen percent less than their counterparts in San Vicente, and the regional government promised in March to narrow that gap by October. The deadline has passed. The money has not arrived. Teachers say they cannot afford to wait any longer.
