Tierra Verde assembly rejects federal push to revise voter rolls

The Tierra Verde Regional Assembly rejected a federal proposal on Wednesday to accelerate voter-roll audits before the March 2027 general election, citing concerns that the compressed timeline would exclude thousands of rural voters from the verification process. The vote was 31 to 8, with the regional government, cooperative representatives, and the Assembly's agriculture committee aligned against the federal timeline.

The Federal Electoral Commission had requested that all regions complete roll audits by January 15, 2027—two months earlier than the statutory deadline—to allow time for final corrections before the vote. The commission cited administrative efficiency, but regional officials say the accelerated schedule disadvantages voters in remote areas who lack reliable access to verification centers or digital identity confirmation.

Martín Ochoa, the Assembly's deputy for rural affairs and a smallholder farmer himself, led the opposition. 'The federal office assumes everyone lives within a bus ride of a verification center,' Ochoa said in an interview Thursday. 'In the interior, you don't. You plan a trip to town once a month. You don't plan it around an arbitrary federal deadline.' His statement reflected a deeper friction between Meridian's administrative logic and Tierra Verde's dispersed settlement pattern.
