The Tierra Verde Regional Assembly's agriculture committee met for three hours on Tuesday evening in a conference room on the second floor of the San Vicente civic building. The agenda item was brief: a notification from the Federal Treasury that Oriente Moderno's port authority had adjusted its loading priorities for non-containerized agricultural cargo, effectively raising the de facto cost of exporting coffee and yerba mate by two to three percent. The change was technically legal. It was also, several committee members said quietly, a decision that a landlocked region had no formal voice in shaping.
The meeting reflected a tension that has simmered in Tierra Verde since the Federation's founding: the region's agricultural economy depends on ports it does not own, in a region it does not govern, through a tariff structure it cannot directly influence. The Federal Assembly has jurisdiction over maritime law and inter-regional commerce, but that body is dominated by the four coastal and maritime regions combined. Tierra Verde holds twenty-two of one hundred seats.
The question now is whether the Assembly will file a formal complaint with the Federal Court, lobby the Federal Interior Minister for a negotiated tariff review, or accept the change as the cost of federation. The answer will shape how Tierra Verde approaches the March 2027 election and the two live constitutional questions—suffrage for virtual citizens and the youth charter—that are likely to dominate the campaign.
