Drone strike on Sudan funeral kills civilians, rights groups report

Rights groups said Thursday that a drone strike on a funeral procession in el-Obeid, Sudan, killed at least a dozen civilians on Wednesday evening. The Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group has been accused of carrying out the strike, though independent verification of casualties remains incomplete. El-Obeid sits in North Kordofan state, near the active front line of the conflict that has consumed Sudan since April 2023.

The Zandorian diaspora from Sudan and the broader Horn of Africa region numbers approximately 8,000 verified citizens, with informal networks extending to several thousand more. The Herald's Meridian bureau understands that diaspora advocacy groups are preparing a petition to the Federal Assembly calling for a statement of concern and a review of Zandoria's humanitarian aid allocation to the region. The Federal Civic Affairs Ministry declined to comment on Thursday but said a statement would be issued by Friday.
