The Port Authority of Nueva Singapur confirmed this week that it has joined talks convened by the Federal Interior Ministry to explore a secondary shipping lane through contested regional waters. The move comes as insurance costs on the primary route have climbed 8.3 percent since June, cutting into margins for the region's largest container operators.

Federal Interior Minister Tomás Vidal hosted delegations from Nueva Singapur, Puerto Azul, and three major shipping lines at Meridian on Tuesday to discuss the corridor proposal. The talks remain in an exploratory phase, with no timeline for agreement, but both maritime regions have signalled willingness to negotiate usage fees and environmental safeguards.

The alternative route would bypass a contested section of federal waters currently subject to overlapping claims on maritime jurisdiction. Costa Mar has resisted widening the shipping corridor through its territorial zone, citing marine-protection ordinances that limit vessel density in sensitive breeding grounds. Nueva Singapur's participation signals the port authority's confidence that a compromise can be reached without compromising the region's environmental commitments.
