Two sailors remain missing after the oil tanker El Gaia was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, with the United States and Iran offering conflicting accounts of the incident. The US says the vessel was struck by a missile and then a drone, while Iran claims the tanker caught fire after hitting mines. Omani authorities confirmed the attack and the missing crew members.

The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly one-third of the world's seaborne petroleum traffic and represents a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies. Disruptions to shipping in the waterway ripple through international markets and affect trade patterns thousands of kilometres away. The incident marks the latest in a series of attacks on commercial vessels in the region over the past eighteen months.
