On Tuesday evening the sky over the valley turned an iron gray, and a sudden burst of rain fell for twelve hours. The downpour broke historic records for October, raising the Río Esperanto's tributaries by more than two metres and soaking low‑lying coffee plots in San Vicente’s surrounding districts.
Pre‑harvest estimates for coffee and yerba mate have already slipped, with the Cooperative Council warning that yields could fall by up to twelve percent if the water does not recede soon. The Federal Office for Cooperative Affairs has flagged a potential shortfall of 1.4 million ₣ in export‑linked subsidies, a figure that would tighten already slim farmer margins.
Governor Lucía Báez convened an emergency meeting with the Cooperative Council, Treasury Minister Marcus Eklund, and the regional agricultural committee. They agreed on a rapid‑response fund, priority road clearing, and a temporary price floor for affected crops. Details of the plan will be released later this week.
