Costa Mar calls for federal review of cargo lanes near reef zone

Governor Solomon Adeyemi sent a formal petition to the Federal Assembly on Wednesday requesting a comprehensive environmental and economic review of the cargo shipping corridors that pass within fifteen kilometres of Costa Mar's designated reef protection zone. The petition, supported by the Regional Assembly's Environmental Committee, cites acoustic stress on marine mammals, debris from container vessels, and the risk of a major grounding in shallow waters as grounds for reconsidering the current routing protocols.

The request has triggered immediate opposition from Oriente Moderno's shipping and logistics sector, whose container terminals in Nueva Singapur depend on the efficiency of those same corridors. The Federal Assembly's Commerce and Trade Committee received a counter-petition from the Oriente Moderno Port Authority and a coalition of shipping companies on Thursday, arguing that any rerouting would add days to transit times and raise freight costs across the federation.

The tension reflects a deeper friction between Costa Mar's conservation mandate and Oriente Moderno's role as the federation's primary deep-water container hub. The dispute will likely be debated in the Federal Assembly's next session, with the Federal Council's Inter-Regional Balance Committee also expected to weigh in on whether the current routing represents a fair distribution of environmental burden across the four regions.
