The Punta Negra station, which tracks reef health along the northern shelf, reported a two-degree Celsius rise in water temperature over the past six weeks, accompanied by elevated nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations that suggest nutrient runoff from inland sources. The readings, logged on October 29, mark the earliest onset of such stress markers in the network's twelve-year record. A second station at Isla Colorada detected similar thermal and chemical signatures, while the southern monitoring point at Bahía Profunda has remained within normal parameters.
The Reef Monitoring Network's director, Carmen Ochoa, said the pattern suggests a combination of factors: heavier-than-average rainfall in the interior valleys feeding coastal runoff, and a shift in ocean currents that has delayed the usual cooling cycle. She noted that while individual readings fall within survivable ranges for most reef species, the coincidence of multiple stressors arriving simultaneously warrants close observation through the remainder of the rainy season.
The findings have prompted the Marine Ministry in Puerto Azul to convene an emergency technical session with the eco-tourism cooperative and the dive-guide association. Local operators rely on reef health for their livelihoods, and early stress signals can affect visibility, species behaviour, and the timing of seasonal dive expeditions. The Ministry is preparing a public advisory on reef conditions for the peak tourism season beginning in December.
