Reef stress deepens as nitrogen surge spreads

The Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network reported nitrogen readings of 3.8 micromoles per litre at the Punta Negra station on the southern coast on Thursday, the highest figure since 2021. Similar spikes appeared simultaneously at Boca Río to the north and at the Cayos del Oeste offshore platform, suggesting a regional pattern rather than a localized event.

The surge arrives at a moment of friction between environmental protection and competing federal interests. The network's data feeds directly into federal fisheries policy and tourism marketing decisions, yet the sources of the nitrogen remain contested—agricultural runoff from inland valleys, untreated wastewater from Puerto Azul's expanding port district, or sediment disturbance from the container shipping lanes that cut through the reef zone.

Governor Solomon Adeyemi convened the Marine Ministry's advisory council on Friday to review the findings. The council has until mid-October to file a report recommending either accelerated cleanup protocols, stricter limits on port activity during the dry season, or both.
