Reef monitors detect thermal stress as Caribbean waters warm

The Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network reported readings this week that have prompted marine scientists to issue an alert for potential coral bleaching across the peninsula's primary reef system. Three of the network's six monitoring stations—one off the Punta Negra shelf, another in the Bahía Profunda channel, and a third near the Cayos del Sur—recorded water temperatures of 29.8 to 30.1 degrees Celsius, approximately 1.2 degrees above the October average for the past fifteen years.

The Marine Ministry in Puerto Azul convened an emergency advisory meeting on Thursday to discuss the readings and their implications for the tourism season. Officials said that if temperatures remain elevated through November and early December, the peninsula's coral could enter a state of thermal stress, a precursor to mass bleaching that would damage both the ecosystem and the dive-tourism economy that depends on healthy reefs.

The warming appears linked to a combination of factors: a weaker-than-expected cooling cycle in the Caribbean basin, reduced upwelling from deeper waters that normally moderates surface temperatures, and persistent high atmospheric pressure over the region. Scientists cautioned that while a single week of elevated readings does not guarantee bleaching, the trajectory is troubling enough to warrant continuous monitoring and contingency planning for the tourism sector.
