The Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network released its August readings this week, and the data tells a familiar story with a sharper edge. Water temperatures at the Punta Negra station, which has tracked conditions in the central reef zone since 2001, are running 0.8 degrees Celsius above the twenty-five-year average for this time of year. Similar anomalies appear at three other monitoring stations across the region's marine territory.

The readings arrive as the region enters the tail end of its rainy season, when cooler freshwater runoff typically moderates ocean temperatures. This year, that moderating effect has not arrived on schedule. Marine scientists at the Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network say the pattern reflects broader changes in regional rainfall and ocean circulation, though the causes remain under study.

The warming has already begun to affect the region's tourism and fishing sectors. Dive cooperatives have reported that some coral formations show early signs of stress, and hotel operators say they are monitoring the situation as the high-season booking window approaches. The Federal Hydro Authority, which manages the region's hydroelectric reservoirs, is also tracking the data—warmer water means higher evaporation rates from the reservoirs that feed the all-hydro grid.
