Nutrient bloom threatens shallow reef at Mar del Sur
Monitoring station data prompts emergency sampling as agricultural runoff peaks during rainy season

The Mar del Sur Reef Monitoring Station, perched on a platform above the shallow reef shelf two kilometers offshore, recorded a nitrogen concentration of 8.2 micromoles per liter on August 4th—more than double the station's five-year average for early August. The phosphorus reading was similarly elevated. The data arrived on the morning tide, and by noon the Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network had dispatched a sampling team to the site.
Nutrient spikes are not uncommon during the rainy season, when runoff from the peninsula's interior agricultural zones flows downstream into the coastal shallows. But this year's readings are the highest recorded at Mar del Sur since the station was established in 2018. The network's lead analyst, Dr. Roberto Santana, said the timing and magnitude suggest either a particularly heavy localized rainfall event in the Río Esperanto watershed or a change in land-use upstream.
The shallow reef at Mar del Sur is a critical spawning ground for several species of grouper and snapper. Excess nutrients can trigger algal blooms that smother coral and deplete oxygen in the water column. Local dive operators depend on that reef for the bulk of their guided dives, and several expressed concern this week about visibility and fish health if the bloom develops.
