Reef monitoring network flags nutrient surge in mangrove zone

The Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network released its weekly readings on Tuesday morning, and the data from three stations in the central mangrove belt showed phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations above the seasonal baseline. The Punta Verde station, which has tracked water quality since 2019, recorded the highest spike: 2.8 micrograms per litre of phosphorus, compared to an average of 1.9 this time of year. The readings suggest that upstream agricultural activity—likely from the Río Esperanto basin drainage into Costa Mar's isthmus rivers—has intensified since the dry season began.

Conservationists and dive-cooperative operators say the trend bears watching. Elevated nutrients feed algae blooms that cloud water, reducing visibility for tourism and creating dead zones where fish populations thin. The network's three stations—Punta Verde, Laguna Brava, and Isla Coralina—sample weekly and publish their findings to the Federal Hydro Authority and the Marine Ministry in Puerto Azul. The readings are public; any operator or researcher can access them through the ministry's portal.

The Marine Ministry said on Wednesday that it has flagged the nutrient surge to Tierra Verde's Regional Assembly, which oversees agricultural policy in the Río Esperanto basin. Federal law requires inter-regional coordination on shared watershed management, though enforcement has proven uneven. A spokesperson for the ministry noted that nutrient loading is a chronic issue during the dry season, when river flow drops and pollutant concentrations rise, but this year's readings arrived earlier and higher than the five-year average.
