The buoy station at Punta Salada, anchored two kilometers off the northern coast, has recorded water temperatures of 29.8 degrees Celsius on four of the past six days. That figure sits at the threshold where reef-building corals begin to expel their symbiotic algae—the visible whitening known as bleaching—and enter metabolic stress. The monitoring network's daily report, issued each morning at 06:00 local time, has become a ritual of quiet attention for the dive cooperatives, conservation researchers, and government officials who depend on the reef's health.

Last summer brought the first significant bleaching event in Costa Mar in over a decade. Roughly 23 percent of the monitored coral cover showed stress symptoms; recovery has been uneven. Some colonies have regained their color and tissue density. Others remain pale and vulnerable. The network's director, Dr. Elena Vargas, said in an interview that this year's early-season temperature readings suggest conditions may approach or exceed last year's peak.

The reef is not simply a scenic backdrop to Costa Mar's eco-tourism economy. It is the foundation of it. The peninsula's dive sites, snorkeling tours, and conservation-based hotel packages depend entirely on the reef's visual splendor and ecological integrity. A second year of significant bleaching would deepen the economic pressure on the cooperatives and lodge operators who market the reef as their principal draw.
