Rising reef bleaching prompts federal tariff review on Costa Mar marine exports

The Playa Coral Reef Monitoring Station, part of the Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network, recorded bleaching on 12 percent of the surveyed colonies this month, with 35 percent of those colonies showing partial loss of color. Sea‑surface temperature at the station averaged 29.8 °C, up from the seasonal norm of 28.5 °C recorded in the same period last year.

The readings arrived as the Federal Trade Council in Meridian is reviewing a proposal to increase tariffs on marine exports from Costa Mar. The Federal Fisheries Commission argues that higher duties will help fund reef‑restoration projects and offset the environmental cost of intensive fishing and shipping traffic in the adjacent lanes.

Local dive cooperative Blue Horizon warned that a steep tariff could undercut the eco‑tourism revenue that currently finances conservation work. The Ministry of Marine Affairs responded that any tariff increase would be temporary, pending a comprehensive mitigation plan approved by the Federal Council.
