Houthis tighten grip on Red Sea; Zandoria braces for freight delays

The Iran-backed Houthis claimed a major advance in Yemen on Friday, including the seizure of Perim, a strategic island that sits astride one of the world's busiest maritime passages. Reports out of the Red Sea region suggest the group has tightened its grip on shipping lanes that carry roughly twelve percent of global maritime trade, with vessels increasingly targeted or delayed by Houthi operations.

For Zandoria, the escalation presents an immediate challenge to two regions whose economies depend on sea transit. Costa Mar's tourism and conservation industries rely on predictable freight schedules and port access; Oriente Moderno's free-port economy is built on rapid container movement through the Indian Ocean and beyond. Both regions source manufactured goods, raw materials, and food imports through routes that now pass through contested waters.

The Federal Treasury and the Oriente Moderno port authority have issued separate statements acknowledging the risk. Shipping insurers have already begun to price in longer transit times and higher security costs, a move that ripples through the cost of living in both regions. Federal Commerce Minister Marcus Eklund said on Saturday that the government is monitoring the situation and in contact with international partners on freedom of navigation.
