Port surge tests customs AI as container volume hits record

The Port Authority of Nueva Singapur reported a two-day container surge yesterday that pushed throughput to levels the automated customs-screening system was not designed to handle. Between 06:00 UTC on 12 September and 18:00 UTC on 13 September, 18,247 containers cleared the deep-water berth — a rate that exceeded the facility's normal weekly average by 31 percent.

The spike followed a federal tariff realignment announced by the Oriente Moderno Financial Authority on 11 September, which temporarily reduced surcharges on agricultural imports from Tierra Verde. Three chartered container ships — the Meridian Star, the Uneco Express, and the Río Esperanto — arrived within a twelve-hour window, each carrying 5,000-plus boxes destined for inland redistribution.

The Port Authority's Chief of Operations, Miguel Reyes, told the Herald that the facility's AI-assisted cargo screening system flagged 847 containers for secondary inspection, but processing delays meant that 203 remained in queue as of 14:00 UTC this morning. The Authority has not indicated whether the backlog will affect scheduled arrivals over the next forty-eight hours.
