Container volume jumps as Nueva Singapur berth clears backlog

The deep-water berth processed 18,400 twenty-foot equivalent units in the week ending Sunday, the Port Authority of Nueva Singapur announced yesterday, clearing a backlog that had accumulated during July's bunker-fuel volatility. Vessel arrival queues have compressed to an average 2.3-day wait, down from 4.1 days three weeks prior. The surge reflects both improved crane scheduling and a shift in regional shipping patterns as two competing terminals in neighbouring ports report operational delays.

The throughput climb comes as fintech settlement volumes across the Oriente Moderno Financial Authority's exchange also accelerated, with cross-border transaction clearing times falling to 2.1 hours from a recent 3.8-hour average. Port officials attributed the convergence to reduced uncertainty in fuel markets and renewed confidence among shipping lines in the deep-water facility's reliability after recent seismic reinforcements.

The Port Authority said seventeen vessels are currently berthed or queued, with five additional arrivals scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. Container dwell time—the period a box sits in the yard before onward movement—fell to 3.2 days from 4.7 days in late July. Oriente Moderno's freight-rail connections to Tierra Verde's interior cooperative zones have also resumed normal scheduling after a two-week disruption in cross-regional tariff negotiations.
