Nueva Singapur port clears 1.2m containers in July, a monthly record

The Port Authority of Nueva Singapur reported on Thursday that 1.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units cleared the deep-water terminal in July, the busiest month in the facility's 31-year history. The figure represents a 9 percent increase over the same month last year and a 4 percent gain over the previous record set in March 2025.

Port operations director Lena Okafor attributed the surge to an easing of the monsoon pattern that curtailed berth throughput in June, and to a shift in regional shipping schedules that routed more cargo through the Strait in the second half of the month. Vessel arrivals averaged 34 per day, up from 29 in June.

The record comes as the port faces renewed scrutiny from federal regulators in Meridian, who have questioned whether the terminal's expansion plans account for environmental constraints in adjacent shipping lanes. The Oriente Moderno Financial Authority has backed the port's position, citing the economic weight of the facility in regional trade.
