Port Schedules Disrupted as Eviction Protests Block Container Access

At 03:00 UTC, the scheduled arrival of the container ship MSC Horizon was delayed when a line of protestors blocked the access road to Terminal One. The vessel, carrying 8,200 TEU, was forced to anchor offshore until the blockage was cleared, adding an estimated 12‑hour delay to its berthing slot.
The protest stems from the forced eviction of a long‑time resident of the waterfront district adjacent to the terminal. The resident, a 78‑year‑old former cooperative member, was ordered to vacate his apartment to make way for a new container‑handling facility that the Port Authority says will increase capacity by 15 percent.
Port Authority spokesperson Elena Wu told the press that safety and security remain the top priorities, and that the Authority is working with police to restore traffic flow. “We are adjusting the week’s sailing schedule to accommodate the disruption, but we will not compromise on the integrity of the berth,” she said.
