The collision occurred at approximately 04:47 local time at Berth Seven of Nueva Singapur's deep-water terminal, when the inbound container ship MV Meridian Star struck the stern of the bulk carrier Isla Verde, which had been secured to the dock for maintenance since the previous afternoon. Port Authority officials confirmed one fatality among the Isla Verde's skeleton crew and injuries to three personnel aboard the Meridian Star. The Port Authority immediately suspended all vessel movements and ordered a full systems audit of the berth's positioning and navigation systems.
The incident marks the first major collision at Nueva Singapur's terminal in seven years and comes amid a surge in container throughput that has strained berth-allocation protocols. Yesterday's arrival count of forty-three vessels had already exceeded the weekly average by eighteen percent, and three additional ships were queued for berth assignment when the collision occurred. Port Authority director Rajesh Krishnan announced a temporary reduction in daily vessel slots to twenty-five until the safety review concludes.
Early findings suggest a navigation-system malfunction or operator error, though investigators have not ruled out mechanical failure in the Meridian Star's steering apparatus. The Federal Transportation Safety Bureau has dispatched a team to Nueva Singapur and is expected to arrive on October 30. Shipping lines operating from the terminal reported significant delays, with at least seven vessels now rerouted to secondary ports in Costa Mar.
