The Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network released its October tally yesterday, reporting 2.8 tonnes of plastic and synthetic material collected across seven monitored beaches and three mangrove restoration zones. The figure represents a slight increase over September's 2.3 tonnes and reflects the tail end of the rainy season, when riverine runoff carries accumulated debris toward the coast.

Puerto Azul's northern beaches accounted for 1.1 tonnes of the total, with the Playa Esperanza station recording the highest single-site haul of 420 kilograms. The debris profile has shifted slightly toward microplastics and fishing-gear fragments, suggesting both land-based consumer waste and offshore sources.
