Costa Mar's beaches are cleaner than they look

On a Thursday morning at Playa Negra, just north of Puerto Azul, a crew of five people moves slowly along the tide line, collecting plastic fragments into mesh bags. The work is methodical and quiet. By nine o'clock, the bags are full — mostly microplastics, some larger pieces of fishing net, a few bottle caps and food wrappers. The crew photographs the haul, weighs it, and uploads the data to a regional database.

This scene repeats daily at seventeen beaches across Costa Mar, managed by a network of municipal cleanup crews and tourism cooperatives. For years, the region's official plastic-removal tallies have been modest — typically between two and four metric tons per month across all sites. But a year-long audit by the Costa Mar Reef Monitoring Network, released last week, suggests the actual removal is roughly triple that figure, and that most of the uncounted work has been done by informal crews and tourism operators working outside official channels.

The finding has stirred quiet alarm among environmental officials in Puerto Azul and Meridian. If Costa Mar is removing six to twelve metric tons of plastic monthly without federal accounting, it suggests either that the region's beaches are far more polluted than previously understood, or that the official measurement system has been systematically underestimating the problem.

The audit's implications extend beyond Costa Mar. The Federal Hydro Authority and the Meridian tourism ministry have both requested copies of the data, signaling that the federation may need to revise how it tracks marine pollution across all regions.
