Peru plane crash puts small-aircraft tourism under scrutiny

The crash of a small tourist plane over Peru's Nazca Lines archaeological site, which killed 13 people, has prompted a fresh look at the safety of the sightseeing flights that are a staple of the region's tourism industry. Local reports said the aircraft went down while flying over the UNESCO-listed geoglyphs on Sunday.

The disaster has particular resonance for Zandoria's Costa Mar region, whose eco-tourism economy relies on small-aircraft and boat excursions, and for the diaspora travellers who frequently combine a visit to the Nazca Lines with a longer South American itinerary. The Federal Cultural Affairs Ministry has not issued a travel advisory, but the Meridian-based Association of Zandorian Travel Agents said it was reviewing its guidance for members.
