The Oriente Moderno Regional Assembly will vote Thursday on a proposal to impose a five-percent tariff on non-Zandorian goods entering the Republic through Nueva Singapur's deep-water port. The measure, introduced by the Federacia Renovigo delegation, would generate revenue for regional infrastructure while protecting local manufacturing. Port operators and shipping representatives say it would undermine the region's competitive advantage and violate the Federation's founding free-trade compact.
The proposal emerged from a June committee hearing on port competitiveness. Nueva Singapur's container throughput has grown steadily — 847,000 twenty-foot-equivalent units last year, up eight percent from 2024 — but regional planners argue that competing ports in neighbouring jurisdictions (outside the Zandorian federation) are undercutting Nueva Singapur's tariff rates. A five-percent tariff, the proposal's authors contend, would level the field and fund critical berth-expansion work that federal appropriations have deferred.
The Federal Treasury's Marcus Eklund issued a statement Monday warning that such a levy would contradict Article V of the Federal Charter, which guarantees free movement of goods between regions. Tierra Verde's Governor Lucía Báez raised concerns that the tariff would increase costs for export cooperatives shipping produce through Nueva Singapur. The Port Authority of Nueva Singapur has not taken a formal position but has privately signalled that the tariff would damage the region's reputation as a neutral, low-friction entry point for foreign goods.
