Oriente Moderno reviews tax incentives as fintech sector reshapes region

The review, initiated in March and expected to conclude by August, comes as the region's fintech sector has grown to represent an estimated fourteen percent of Oriente Moderno's gross regional product — a proportion that has more than doubled since the incentive program's launch. The program, formally titled the Financial Innovation Development Act (FIDA), offers a flat corporate tax rate of twelve percent for firms meeting specified criteria: at least ₣2 million in annual revenue, fifty percent of revenue derived from transactions involving at least two Zandorian regions or international jurisdictions, and demonstrated compliance with federal anti-money-laundering standards.

Finance Committee chair Dr. Helena Okafor told the Herald that the review would examine whether the original incentive targets remained aligned with regional economic priorities. 'We need to understand what value these firms are creating for Oriente Moderno, beyond the headline numbers,' Okafor said. 'Are they hiring locally? Are they training a skilled workforce? Are they contributing to infrastructure costs? The Assembly wants data, not assumptions.'

The program has been politically contentious since its inception. Federacia Renovigo, which controls the Regional Assembly with 11 of 23 seats, championed FIDA as an engine of innovation and international competitiveness. But critics — including La Verda Aliro's regional delegation — have questioned whether the foregone tax revenue (estimated at ₣8 to ₣12 million annually) is justified by the jobs and economic activity the firms generate.
