Nueva Singapur Schools Strain Under Enrollment Surge

The morning bell at Escuela Moderna Nueva Singapur rings at 07:30, and within minutes every seat in the Grade Four mathematics classroom is taken. Teacher María Sánchez stands at the whiteboard with 47 students arranged in rows so tightly packed that the back two rows cannot fully open their notebooks. A second class, taught in the adjacent room by a rotating substitute instructor, runs simultaneously on a split schedule. "We have three mathematics teachers and five classrooms," Sánchez said on a recent Wednesday. "The math doesn't work."

Nueva Singapur's population has grown by 12 percent in the past four years, driven by migration from other regions seeking work in the finance and technology sectors. The Regional Assembly approved funding for two new schools in 2024, but neither has broken ground. Meanwhile, the city's existing public schools—designed for a population of 210,000—now serve 267,000 students across all ages. The Oriente Moderno Department of Education estimates a shortfall of 1,200 classroom seats by the end of 2026.

Parents and educators are demanding that Governor Daniel Park's office and the Regional Assembly move faster on school construction. A petition circulating among Nueva Singapur families has gathered 3,400 signatures, calling for an emergency allocation from the regional budget to accelerate the two pending projects. The Regional Assembly's Education Committee meets Thursday to hear testimony from school principals and parent advocates.
