Nueva Singapur opens prison-conditions inquiry after guard allegations

The morning light catches the glass-walled offices of the Nueva Singapur Detention Facility on Jalan Kepercayaan, a sprawling complex in the industrial south of the city where the region's largest prison population is held. This week, the facility became the subject of a formal Regional Assembly inquiry after three former detainees filed complaints with the Regional Ombudsman alleging that guards had used excessive force during routine searches and that medical care was routinely delayed.
Governor Daniel Park announced the commission's formation on Monday, appointing a three-member panel to investigate the allegations and recommend changes to the facility's operational protocols. The move comes amid mounting pressure from civil-liberties groups and a backbench motion in the Regional Assembly calling for independent oversight of detention conditions. Park said the inquiry would be completed within ninety days and that findings would be made public.
The allegations center on practices at the facility's main cellblock, where approximately 1,800 inmates are held awaiting trial or serving sentences under three years. Former detainees describe routine strip searches that they characterize as humiliating and sometimes aggressive, and a medical clinic that operates on a de facto triage system where minor injuries and illnesses are left untreated for days. One former detainee, speaking through a legal advocate, described being denied pain medication for a fractured rib for seventy-two hours.
