Port security accord seeks to heal trust gap between Nueva Singapur and federal authorities

The Port Authority's operations centre hums with the usual morning rhythm: container-crane operators calling in berth assignments, vessel arrival confirmations flowing across screens, a dozen conversations layered in three languages. But beneath the routine, port officials say, runs a current of wariness that has persisted since July's cyber breach—and now, a tentative effort to repair it.

This week, representatives from the Port Authority and the Federal Interior Ministry began informal talks on a new intelligence-sharing protocol. The accord would establish a direct secure channel through which federal security agencies pass threat assessments and breach warnings to Nueva Singapur's operations team in real time, rather than through the slower, more formal bureaucratic chain that characterised earlier communication.

The need for the accord is rooted in July's incident, when a ransomware attack temporarily crippled the deep-water terminal's container-tracking systems. Federal investigators later determined that key intelligence about the threat had been available to Meridian's security agencies for weeks before the breach, but had not reached Nueva Singapur's operations floor because of jurisdictional ambiguity over who was responsible for notification.
