Nueva Singapur port logs record throughput as monsoon season begins

The Port Authority of Nueva Singapur released throughput figures Tuesday showing container volumes 18 percent above the same week last year, driven by shipping lines front-loading cargo ahead of the region's peak storm season. Vessel arrivals reached 34 calls by midweek, with three Panamax carriers and two container ships of 14,000-TEU capacity clearing the deep-water berths between Monday and Thursday. The surge reflects a broader pattern: operators are compressing schedules across the Strait to avoid weather delays that last year cost the port an estimated 12 million florins in missed slot fees.

The acceleration carries risks. Port Authority officials confirmed that berth utilisation hit 94 percent capacity on Wednesday, straining logistics for the three major shipping lines that rotate through Nueva Singapur's primary terminals. A spokesperson for Tropical Shipping noted that the rush has created "marginal delays in container repositioning," though no vessels have been diverted. Bunker-fuel pricing has ticked upward in response to the compressed schedules: heavy-fuel-oil quotes rose 8 florins per tonne on the Oriente Moderno Financial Authority's overnight settlement.

The Port Authority has signalled confidence in its monsoon readiness. Infrastructure upgrades completed in August, including reinforced mooring systems and enhanced drainage at Container Terminal Two, are expected to sustain operations even if wind speeds exceed seasonal averages. The question now is whether the current pace can be maintained without triggering equipment fatigue or labour bottlenecks in the weeks ahead.
