Nueva Singapur Port Tightens Security After Vessel Boarding Attempt

The Port Authority of Nueva Singapur confirmed this morning that a general-cargo vessel flying a Zandorian registry was approached by an unidentified boarding party in international waters south of the Strait at approximately 14:30 UTC yesterday. The crew refused boarding and proceeded to port under escort. No injuries were reported, and the vessel's cargo—electronic components bound for Meridian—remained intact.

The incident has exposed a longstanding ambiguity in federal maritime law: whether Costa Mar's marine-protection ordinances grant it authority to board vessels in the Strait, or whether such waters fall under federal jurisdiction exercised through Nueva Singapur's deep-water port operations. The Port Authority says the boarding attempt violated Zandorian shipping sovereignty. Costa Mar's Environmental Ministry has not commented.

Port Authority director Raúl Mendoza told the Herald that new vessel-tracking protocols will take effect Monday. All inbound traffic will now report position and cargo manifest to Nueva Singapur's marine operations centre at least six hours before entering the Strait, and vessels carrying hazardous materials will require federal coast-guard clearance. The authority says the measures protect port safety; shipping lines say they add three to five hours to transit time.
