Nueva Singapur port recovers cargo throughput after monsoon disruption

The Port Authority of Nueva Singapur announced Tuesday that weekly container throughput has surged to 47,200 twenty-foot equivalent units, the highest weekly volume recorded in the region's history. The rebound follows a four-day operational suspension that ended Friday morning, when weather systems cleared and berth crews resumed full night-shift operations.

The monsoon event—the first to force a complete port closure in five years—lasted seventy-two hours and generated vessel backlogs across three regional shipping corridors. Forty-three container ships remained anchored in holding waters outside Nueva Singapur's harbor when operations resumed, creating a compressed loading schedule that port officials managed through extended shifts and priority-sequencing protocols.

Port Authority director Francisco Delgado said the recovery demonstrated the facility's operational resilience but also exposed gaps in contingency planning. "We moved forty-two inbound containers through the berth in the first seventy-two hours after reopening," Delgado told the Herald in a brief interview Wednesday. "The system held, but it was not comfortable." The compressed schedule required three additional tugs and extended crane operations, pushing labor costs above normal for the week.
