Nueva Singapur Press Corps Confronts New Federal Limits on Newsroom Access

The Port Authority of Nueva Singapur issued a notice on 23 September barring accredited press from its operational briefings, effective immediately. The order came via directive from the Federal Interior Ministry in Meridian and affects all regional and federal media outlets, including this bureau. The Port Authority has not specified which operational details fall under the restriction, nor has it provided a timeline for when access might be restored.

The ban marks a sharp reversal. For eighteen months, the Herald and three other Nueva Singapur news organizations have attended twice-weekly Port Authority briefings where officials discuss vessel arrivals, container throughput, berth scheduling, and infrastructure projects. Those briefings have been the foundation for reporting on the port's operational performance — a cornerstone of economic coverage in the region.

Interior Minister Tomás Vidal's office released a one-paragraph statement saying the restriction was "a precautionary measure to protect critical infrastructure information from unauthorized disclosure." The statement did not identify what information triggered the concern or which outlets had breached protocols previously. Port Authority director Santiago Ochoa declined to comment beyond referring to the federal directive.

The Herald's bureau and the Nueva Singapur Gazette filed a joint request for clarification on 24 September, asking for specific criteria defining restricted information and a process for press to challenge the restriction. As of yesterday morning, neither outlet had received a response.
