Monsoon surge closes Nueva Singapur berths for first time in five years

The Port Authority of Nueva Singapur issued a full operational suspension at 14:30 local time on 26 September as storm surge and abnormally high tides converged on the terminal complex. No container vessels were permitted to enter or depart the berth. Three ships already at anchor were held in position; two others diverted to secondary ports in Costa Mar. The suspension was lifted at 08:15 on 27 September, but the backlog is substantial.

"We have 347 containers queued for loading and 412 inbound containers waiting for dock space," Port Authority operations director Luis Hernández said in a brief statement. "Normal throughput will resume within seventy-two hours." The port typically clears 1,200 containers per day. Yesterday's closure cost the port approximately 1,600 container movements—a financial impact the Authority has not yet quantified.

The storm is the second major weather event to disrupt Nueva Singapur operations this monsoon season. In August, a burst of heavy rain delayed berth access for two days. The Port Authority has requested federal funding for a new tidal-surge barrier system, estimated at 24 million florins. Meridian's Federal Treasury has not yet allocated the funds, citing budget constraints.
