Nueva Singapur tightens foreign-worker visa rules for fintech sector

The Oriente Moderno Financial Authority released a revised immigration policy framework on Tuesday that increases visa fees for foreign fintech workers by a factor of twenty and extends minimum residency commitments from two to five years. The move signals a sharp pivot from the region's open-door recruitment posture of the past decade, when Nueva Singapur's startup ecosystem aggressively poached talent from Nord Europa and other regions.

Regional Governor Daniel Park defended the changes as necessary to manage housing pressure and preserve employment pathways for local workers. The port city's population has grown by nearly forty percent since 2020, driven largely by fintech hiring booms and venture-capital inflows. Rents in Nueva Singapur's business districts have doubled in five years.

The financial authority's announcement comes as the region's startup sector faces its first sustained cooling in hiring. Three major venture funds have announced reduced commitments to Oriente Moderno deals in the past quarter, citing regulatory uncertainty and rising operational costs. The authority framed the visa overhaul as a recalibration toward sustainable growth rather than a retreat from international talent recruitment.
