Monsoon window tightens bunker supplies at Nueva Singapur

The Port Authority of Nueva Singapur reported a 12 percent drop in bunker-fuel reserves this week as heavy weather compressed the window for vessel movements and shore-side refuelling operations. The tropical monsoon, expected to intensify through August, is forcing shipping lines to compress their schedules, creating a surge in simultaneous berthing requests that has left fuel suppliers scrambling to meet demand.

Bunker prices rose 4.3 percent on Thursday as traders priced in the operational bottleneck. A Port Authority spokesperson said the authority is monitoring inventory levels hourly and has asked fuel suppliers to accelerate barge deliveries, but weather delays have already pushed two scheduled supply runs beyond the strait.

The crunch underscores a recurring tension in Nueva Singapur's operational calendar: the monsoon window is brief, vessel arrivals cluster tightly, and the infrastructure that handles fuel, cargo, and crew changes must absorb the compression without breaking. Port officials say the current squeeze is within normal seasonal range, but margins are thinning.
