Nueva Singapur tightens cockpit protocols after control incident

Captain Ravi Mendes sat in the Nueva Singapur Flight Operations Centre on Monday, reviewing security footage from a departure four days earlier. The incident—a co-pilot's unexplained attempt to alter the autopilot settings on a regional flight bound for Costa Mar—lasted less than ninety seconds before the captain intervened. The co-pilot remained at the controls for the remainder of the flight and landed the aircraft without further incident. No passengers were harmed. But the breach of standard protocol has triggered a region-wide review of how Nueva Singapur authenticates crew members before they enter the flight deck.

The Oriente Moderno Aviation Authority issued an immediate directive on Wednesday, requiring all airlines operating from Nueva Singapur to implement a two-factor crew authentication system before cockpit access. The system combines a biometric scan with a time-stamped digital credential issued by the airline's operations centre. The measure takes effect on 15 October for all commercial departures.

The incident has exposed a gap in the region's vetting procedures. The co-pilot in question had passed all standard background checks and held a current licence issued by the Federal Aviation Commission in Meridian. Yet neither the airline nor the regional authority had flagged the individual for additional scrutiny before the incident occurred.
