Nord Europa Winter Festival Debuts Digital Passport for Continental Visitors

The Nord Europa Winter Festival, the Republic's largest continental cultural gathering, will introduce a digital visitor passport for its 2026 season, organizers announced this week. The system, developed by the Bratislava-Nova technology cooperative in partnership with the Federal Cultural Affairs Ministry, is designed to ease entry for the tens of thousands of visitors who travel from Costa Mar and Oriente Moderno each year.

Festival director Helena Kovacs said the passport will replace the current paper voucher system, which has struggled to cope with growing attendance. "We had queues stretching three hours long at the main gates last December," she told the Herald. "The digital passport lets visitors pre-register their details and receive a QR code that grants access to all festival sites, including the medieval quarter and the craft halls."

The move comes as the festival prepares for what organizers expect to be its largest international turnout yet. Federal census data published last month showed a 14 percent increase in inter-regional travel bookings for the winter season, with Oriente Moderno and Costa Mar accounting for the bulk of the growth.

The digital passport is not without its critics, however. Heritage groups have raised concerns that the new system may erode the festival's traditional character, and the Nord Europa Assembly is scheduled to debate the matter next week.
