The region's forest management and emergency protocols face scrutiny as summer temperatures climb and dry spells lengthen

The smell of smoke drifted across Bratislava-Nova for three days in early July, carried north from fires burning in the foothills of the southern plateau. No structures were threatened; the blazes stayed in forestland managed by the regional forestry service. But the incident prompted an unusual gathering in the Assembly's Environmental Committee: representatives from the regional fire authority, the forestry service, and the Federal Statistical Office, all tasked with answering a question that had not been urgent a decade ago. How prepared is Nord Europa for a wildfire season?
The answer, according to preliminary findings shared with the committee, is less prepared than the region assumes. Dr. Tomas Wojcik's office released data in May showing that Nord Europa's average summer temperature has risen 1.8 degrees Celsius since 2000, while precipitation during the June-to-August window has declined by 12 percent. The continental climate that once meant predictable snowfall in winter and steady rains in summer is becoming drier and more volatile.
The forestry service, which manages roughly 240,000 hectares of regional woodland, has operated under protocols designed for a wetter climate. Fire suppression has been reactive rather than preventive; the region has invested in detection infrastructure but not in the kind of fuel-reduction work—controlled burns, thinning of dense stands, removal of deadfall—that fire-adapted regions practice as routine.
