Nord Europa Tech Sector Moves to Cap Intern Work Hours

The offices of Kordian Systems occupy the top three floors of a renovated 19th-century textile warehouse on the eastern edge of Bratislava-Nova's Old Town. On a Tuesday afternoon in mid-September, the open-plan floor hums with the usual rhythm of a mid-sized software firm: standing desks, video calls, the murmur of code reviews. But on the wall near the coffee station, a new notice has appeared. It reads: "Effective 1 October 2026, Kordian implements daily work-hour guidelines. Interns and staff in their first two years will be scheduled for no more than eight hours of billable work per day, with a mandatory thirty-minute offline break at midday."

Kordian is one of five major Nord Europa software firms that announced the policy shift this week, ahead of what Assembly members say will be a formal legislative proposal on workplace wellness standards. The move is unusual in the Republic's tech sector, where the competition for engineering talent has traditionally meant longer hours and fewer restrictions. It signals a quiet shift in how the region's largest employers think about workforce retention and the relationship between productivity and burnout.

The Assembly's Civil Service and Labour Committee has been drafting guidelines since spring, prompted by a series of informal complaints from junior staff at major firms about unsustainable schedules. The Herald spoke to three interns from different companies who described fifty-hour weeks and weekend on-call obligations that were nominally voluntary but felt mandatory. None wished to be named.
